Newcastle’s Health Index score decreased in the year before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The city's highest score in the index is for health relating to 'access to services'. This looks at distance to GP services, distance to pharmacies, distance to sports or leisure facilities and internet access. The lowest score is for 'personal wellbeing'.

The North East as a whole is ranked as the worst region.
