Partnership working in action across the North East

A new independent evaluation has highlighted the impact of partnership working between North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), VONNE, VCSE organisations and the North East Healthwatch Network in helping shape the future of ambulance services across our region.

The project brought together 12 local Healthwatch organisations, including Healthwatch Newcastle, and a wide range of community partners to hear directly from people about their experiences of ambulance, NHS 111 and patient transport services. More than 2,300 people shared their views, helping ensure local voices informed the development of NEAS' Clinical Strategy.

We are proud to have been part of this work alongside colleagues from across the North East Healthwatch Network, VONNE, VCSE organisations and NEAS.

The evaluation recognises the role the North East Healthwatch Network played in bringing together local insight from communities across the region. By working collaboratively, Healthwatch organisations were able to share knowledge, reach diverse communities and gather feedback that may not otherwise have been heard.

North East Ambulance Service: Experiences in Gateshead & Newcastle

Healthwatch Gateshead and Healthwatch Newcastle recently engaged with local residents to understand experiences and opinions of the North East Ambulance Service. We wanted to understand public perceptions of the service, what trust means to the public, and overall levels of trust felt towards NEAS.
Overall, feedback was positive, however, most of those we consulted felt that they could not fully trust NEAS. Specific elements of trust were identified and included:
- Reliability, Availability, and Responsiveness
- Delivering a High Standard of Care
- Integrity and the Alignment of Words & Actions
- Patients’ Safety

Investigating BAME involvement in NEAS services and recruitment

In autumn 2016, we were invited by the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (NEAS) to carry out some research on the organisation’s behalf. The purpose was to hear views and experiences of NEAS services and also investigate the barriers that Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities face.
